8th September Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Birthday

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was a musician, singer, poet, film maker and lyricist. He was born on 8th September 1926 in Sadiya, Assam. He was exposed to musical influence by his mother, who introduced him to the traditional music of Assam. He wrote his first song ‘Agnijugor Firingoti Moi‘ at the age of 13 and he was well gifted with all the potentialities to become a lyricist, composer and singer.
He was widely known as ‘ Sudhkantha’. His songs were mainly written and sung in Assamese. They have also been translated into many languages, most notably in Bengali and Hindi. He also acknowledged to have introdued the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India to Hindi cinema at the national level. He was awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke in 1992, which is the highest award in cinema by the Government of India. He was also awarded the padmabhushan, Indian second highest civilian award in 2001.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika died due to multi organ failure on 5th June 2011. His funeral was attended by an estimated half a million people. He was cremated on 9th November.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika may not be with us today but his songs, music and our love for him will keep him alive for eternity.
